The government issued statutory guidance for local authorities on family and friends care earlier this year. The guidance states that local authorities must produce a family and friends care policy by 30th September 2011, and that in drawing it up they must consult with children and young people, family and friends carers and parents as appropriate.
It is an excellent opportunity, as part of the consultation, for members of support groups to let local authorities know what they feel should be included in these policies. I have a letter that could be sent to the Director of Children’s Services for your authority, offering to take part in the consultation, and reminding them of some of the issues that the policy ought to cover. The meeting I had with James and Veronica from Central Bedfordshire was extremely positive, with them offering a room in which to have the meetings! They are going away to think on how they can contact all Grandparent/Kinship Carers, with the hope of having a meeting with us all early July to find out exactly what we require in terms of support and help from them.
